"THE MURDERS AT WHITE HOUSE FARM" (series)
Review by Dennis D. McDonald
A family—including 2 small children— is murdered in a rural Wessex farmhouse. The local police initially rule it as a murder-suicide. One veteran detective suspects another scenario. Despite opposition from his boss the detective continues to investigate. For him it’s an uphill battle but the truth—and this is all based on a true story—is gradually and painfully revealed.
The acting, direction, editing, script, and production design in this 6-episode series are excellent. The story take place in the mid-1980’s with clothes, cars, and home furnishings accurately reflecting that. But drama and mystery are the focus here, not the physical environment. This is a troubled family and these troubles are gradually revealed in a methodical and organized fashion.
The cast is universally excellent. Fans of GAME OF THRONES will recognize several familiar faces. I was especially impressed with the photography. Office and home shots are very carefully framed. External shots, including many aerial views of the countryside, emphasize the isolation of the murder scene.
If you like police procedurals you’ll enjoy this. But, don’t expect histrionics or scenery chewing. This is a “slow burn” tale that gradually and tantalizingly unfolds over its 6 episodes. Recommended.
