Anthony and Joe Russo's CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR
I actually preferred Batman v Superman and the recent Fantastic Four over Captain America: Civil War. While I respect how Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans have managed to create likable personas for their characters, in CIVIL WAR they are swimming upstream against an almost suffocating tide of fan service and entangling toy sales marketing.

Peyton Reed's ANT-MAN
Another positive factor is the movie’s tone. Good versus evil is presented without excess cruelty or bloodshed.

For me the saving grace of this movie were the lead characters: Chris Evans of Snowpiercer fame as Capt. America, and Scarlett Johansson (Her, Lucy, Under the Skin, Chef) as Black Widow.

But with a movie like X-Men you get the sense that there is just too much of everything — too many characters, too many action scenes, too many speeches, too many forgettable details.
James Mangold's THE WOLVERINE
While I’ve enjoyed the X-Men movies they haven’t significantly resonated with me as I was never really invested in the Marvel universe. The Wolverine is an exception.
Joss Whedon's THE AVENGERS
THE AVENGERS is an OK piece of entertainment, I guess. Several times during the first hour I started to doze off.

I never paid much attention to Marvel comics when I was a kid; “Thor” always struck me as a third-string also-ran property forever in the shadows of the more popular Superman, Batman, or Fantastic Four. But no matter; this film is tricked out with production values and imagery that are first rate.
