RAGE OF BAHAMUT VIRGIN SOUL (24 episode anime series)

Review by Dennis D. McDonald

In a world where gods, demons, and humans live uncomfortably close  together, a decade-old peace is threatened by political and personal animosities. An evil thought to have been permanently imprisoned now threatens the world's stability. Violence and war now encroach on the uneasy peace.

Into this environment emerges young Nina, a child of the remote "dragonfolk." Feisty, super-strong, impetuous -- and downright cute -- she struggles to control her tendency to transform into a firebreathing dragon at inopportune moments.  We follow her through the 24 episodes as she learns how to control her emotions and her transformation skills. Around her revolves an amazingly detailed, complex, and fantastic sequence of events.

Some of this is just plain silly (a talking duck?) but the artwork, animation, and production values  at times are stunning. Individual characters move and talk realistically. Battles are fought with amazing weapons and technologies.

It's world-building on a grand scale, but we never lose sight of individual characters.

It takes a while to catch on to the nuances if you have not watched Season 1 of this series. But it is well worth the effort. Character animation is, in a word, superb. It's a long series but well worth the time and attention.
