Tom Gauld's MOONCOP
A book review by Dennis D. McDonald
Words that come to mind when reading this short cartoon story are:
melancholy
deliberate
spare
gentle
quietly mirthful
We follow a policeman on his daily rounds on a future moon which is gradually being depopulated as people leave and return to Earth. Apparently the lunar colonization effort has has seen better days. The moon cop, even though he still makes his daily rounds, has little to do except get his daily coffee and donuts, help retrieve a lost dog, and return a wandering robot to its home base.
He asks for a transfer back to earth. His transfer request is denied. Why, we don’t know.
This panel illustrates the elements that contribute to the charm and subtlety of this book:
Black, white, gray. Lots of lines. The whole book is like this. Everything meshes wonderfully. Check it out.
