Hisko Hulsing's "UNDONE" (seasons 1 and 2)

Review by Dennis D. McDonald

Add this to the list of really good time travel stories. Rosa Salazar and Bob Odenkirk carry the story with very solid performances but all the main characters make strong impressions as Rosa‘s character learns how to control her time travel skills over the course of two seasons.

Much has been made of the rotoscoping of characters and the painterly display of interior and exterior scenes. That’s all true and I was a bit surprised at how well it all works over the course of the series’ 2 seasons. The animation process is very effective in rendering realistic body movements but most impressive is the realistic rendering of faces and facial expressions.

The story cleverly integrates character personalities with multicultural back stories, personal trauma and growth, and manipulation of multiple timelines. It’s fascinating to read how the pandemic impacted production of the second season. One is tempted to see on screen the evidence of being forced to rely on CGI and small ensemble interactions.

But it all works. And it has cemented in my mind that, along with her performances in Alita Battle Angel and Brand New Cherry Flavor, Rosa Salazar is now my favorite female actor. She is simply amazing.
