A lot has been written about the harrowing plane crash in Flight. Yep, it’s pretty harrowing, but I’d still hold up World War Z, Knowing, and Pitch Black as having comparable crash sequences.

The real star of Flight is Denzel Washington’s incredible performance. I’ve always enjoyed him in movies but here he goes over the top in this portrayal of the physical and psychological impact of alcoholism as his character wrestles with his long nurtured practice of lying to himself.

Don’t watch this movie if you’re looking for something warm and fuzzy. Watch it if you want to see a master actor portray someone forced to wrestle with his own soul in broad daylight.
