Rob Zombie's THE HAUNTED WORLD OF EL SUPERBEASTO

A movie review by Dennis D. McDonald

My biggest complaint about this feature length “adult” cartoon is not about the movie’s gratuitous sex and violence — that’s Rob Zombie’s whole point — it’s one very simple fact:

The movie is not funny.

Yes it’s brightly animated. Yes, the sex, gore, and constant nudity are colorful and cleverly done. Yes, references to every known and trite horror genre are unstoppable. Yes, there’s something here to offend everybody.

I could ignore all that as my tolerance for gratuitous sex and violence in popular entertainment has been honed by many years of movie watching.

But I waited in vain for just one laugh. Just one!

Instead what we have is a slickly produced version of what an old Troma film might look like had money and talent actually been available for a visually coherent piece of feature length schlock. Instead we have a slickly produced piece of mind-numbing adolescent crudity.

My greatest condolences go out not to Rosario Dawson, Paul Giamatti, or Danny Trejo, whose vocal talents are on display here, but to those poor Korean animators who are listed by name in the end credits.

I sincerely hope their association with this film doesn’t come back to haunt them.
