Rodrigo García’s “RAYMOND AND RAY”

Movie review by Dennis D. McDonald

Damaged siblings return for estranged parent’s funeral. We traverse painful back stories, buried truths, and long simmering resentments. It’s a familiar plot line. In the hands of writer/director Garcia we get a fresh, funny, and at times weird tale.

Anchoring all are sensitive and insightful performances by Ewan McGregor and Ethan Hawke as two “half brothers“ whose painful memories of their father haunt them still. Supporting characters’ performances are universally excellent. Editing, photography, production details, and sets are meticulous and realistic.

Be prepared for a fun and even thoughtful time with this film. It provides a welcome respite from explosions, superheroes, wizards, and car chases. It’s also heartfelt but not sappy. And, be prepared for some weird stuff at the cemetery. Recommended!

Author’s note: I had just finished watching tbis film and, after some research, I was surprised to learn writer/director García is the son of celebrated novelist Gabriel García Marquez. He has written a lovely memoir of events surrounding the deaths of both his father and his mother; a review of that book is here.
