Taika Waititi’s “HUNT FOR THE WILDERPEOPLE”

Movie review by Dennis D. McDonald

This little gem from New Zealand follows an unlikely pair as they run from capture by the Evil City Authorities. A young boy is befriended by a gruff mountain-man. While we know that they will bond eventually after initial mutual loathing, the chase through the wilderness is infested with interesting gags, unique off-kilter characters, and performances that keep the story fresh though it veers into silliness towards the end.

Julian Dennison as the kid is a wonder to behold. Fresh, natural, and comedically gifted, he never wears out his welcome. Sam Neill as his grizzled protagonist again proves his comedic worth through an inspired and nutty performance. Director Waititi reinforces his gift for comedy as amply demonstrated in What We Do in the Shadows. The New Zealand wilderness is spectacularly showcased as we follow the chase. Recommended.
