David Fincher's GONE GIRL

Movie review by Dennis D. McDonald

I like Fincher. Fight Club, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Panic Room, and Alien 3 are some of my favorite films.

I love the way he mixes a sweeping camera with a fixation on characters doing and saying outrageous — and sometimes stupid — things as plot threads swirl and intermix.

Sometimes the result is messy as is the case with GONE GIRL but it’s always entertaining.

I won’t attempt to summarize the story. That would take too long and spoil the fun. Let’s just say that you really have to suspend common sense when you watch this film and just go with the flow.

Let’s also say that what this movie reminded me of was a blended mix of both seasons of True Detective to which is a affixed a fragile but showy veneer of bitter middle-class angst and marital subterfuge, plus a lot of dark humor.

This is the best popcorn movie I’ve seen since the last Mission Impossible movie.
