Alex Garland's "DEVS"

Series review by Dennis D. McDonald

Alex Garland (Ex Machina, Annihilation) this time around presents a TV series that touches on many themes including the multiverse, time travel, murder, big data, massive simulation, quantum computers, artificial intelligence, tech moguls, espionage, and loss of a child.

Not everything works but overall the 8-episode series has very high production values, excellent special effects, phenomenal set design, and a soundtrack that is alway interesting and at times spooky. It also does not insult the viewer’s intelligence.

Some have complained at the pace of the story. This is one of the features I enjoyed most. Garland takes time to lay out the story and let us get to know the characters. Some of the most interesting scenes are characters just talking and exploring complex themes such as determinism and free will. At any time though these can switch to a rapid ratcheting up of tension or a sudden explosion of violence.

Highly recommended especially if you are a Garland fan or if you enjoy a well thought out exposition of increasingly interlaced timelines.
