This 1971 Japanese classic combines Japanese yakuza gang warfare, supernatural horror, and lots of bloody swordplay. And black cats. And dragon tattoos. And terrific photography, editing, music, and acting.

The sets and costumes in this movie deserve special praise. Town markets (with one stall selling masks!), narrow alleyways, dark spooky cellars, traditional Japanese clothes – – the atmospheric quality overall is consistent and high. Especially memorable is the unique nighttime spiral cloud on view in the background during the ultimate duel between the two female leads, one a blind swordswoman, the other the yakuza boss.

When it comes to escapist B movies, this one belongs near the top of the list. My recommendation: forget the plot holes and enjoy!
