Bruce A. Evans' MR. BROOKS
What a delightfully twisted little film this is! What could have been a run-of-the-mill mystery is pumped up immensely by clever dialog, crisp editing and direction, and most of all, by terrific performances by Kevin Costner and William Hurt.
Costner plays a serial killer who, during the day, is a pillar of the community and a devoted family man. Hurt plays his evil alter ego whom only we can see and hear as he tempts and taunts Costner’s character. The story centers on the “one last murder” that goes awry and leads to events that quickly spin out of control. Costner wants to stop but Hurt doesn’t. Together they muddle through as they figure out what to do when caught by a blackmailer, an aggressive police investigation, and a sinister family situation that comes out of left field.
